Digital vs. paper punch cards
The paper punch card has worked for decades. So why switch? Here's an honest look at what each one does well, and where each falls short.
The case for paper
Paper punch cards are simple. Anyone understands them, they don't need a smartphone, and printing a few hundred costs very little. If you have a small, loyal customer base and don't want to manage anything online, paper can do the job.
But paper has well-known weaknesses. Cards get lost in wallets, washed in pockets, or left at home. Stamps and punches can be copied. And you have no idea who your loyal customers are: no names, no visit history, and no way to reach them when you have something to announce.
The case for digital
A digital card lives in your customer's Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, on the phone they carry everywhere. It updates every time you add a point, so customers always see their progress. Each point is recorded in your dashboard, so you know who your customers are and how often they come back.
The trade-offs: it costs a monthly fee, and customers need a smartphone. For customers who don't have one, you may want to keep a simple alternative for a while.
Side by side
| Paper punch card | Digital wallet card | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Printing only | Monthly plan (ClubWallet starts at $19/month + VAT) |
| Customer needs | Nothing; works for everyone | A smartphone with Apple Wallet or Google Wallet |
| Lost cards | Progress is lost with the card | The card can be resent; the balance is kept |
| Fraud | Stamps and punches can be copied | Points are only added from your dashboard or scanner |
| Reward types | Usually one stamp per visit | Points per visit, points per amount spent, or cashback |
| Customer data | None | Names, phone numbers, and visit history |
| Reaching customers | Only when they walk in | Push messages and, on iPhone, proximity alerts |
| Branding | Printed design | Your color, icon, and photo, editable anytime |
What changes for your staff
With paper, staff grab a stamp or a hole punch. With a digital card, they scan the QR code or barcode on the customer's phone using the employee scanner, which runs on any phone or tablet. Each employee has a PIN, so you can see who added every point. That's a level of control paper can't offer.
What digital adds
A digital card isn't just a punch card on a phone. You can choose points per amount spent or cashback instead of one punch per visit, set points to expire, and send push messages during your business hours. From the Entrepreneur plan, you can add proximity alerts on iPhone and an automatic birthday gift.
Our take
If you only want a basic “10th visit free” and don't care about knowing your customers, paper still works. If you want to stop fraud, keep customers from losing progress, and be able to bring them back with a message, digital is worth the monthly cost. Many businesses run both for a few weeks while regulars switch over.

Frequently asked questions
Can I move my paper card customers to digital?
Yes. Customers join by scanning your QR poster, and you can add their current progress manually from the dashboard so nobody loses their punches.
What about customers without a smartphone?
A digital card needs Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. If some of your customers don't have a smartphone, you can keep paper cards for them during the transition.
Is a digital card harder for customers to use?
Not really. They scan a QR code once, save the card, and show it at checkout. There's no app to download.
